Another Cotton-Picking Day in the Delta

Written by Chrissy Garner for Travel Tunica

When someone mentions the Delta, what comes to mind?  Probably The Blues, the Mississippi River, agriculture, casinos, and, of course, cotton!  If you’ve visited Tunica, you can see that we rose from acres of farm land to become the great gaming destination we are today.  You may have glanced at the fields of cotton on your way to one of our nine casinos and maybe even stopped to grab a little.  Being that we’re not originally from the Delta area, Lisa and I wanted to learn more about cotton and experience a cotton picker for ourselves.

Football and Hunting Season is Here!

    Written by Webster Franklin

August – the dog days of summer, it’s hot, dry, humid – hotter, dryer and just down right sticky here in the Mississippi Delta.  To top it off, summer is over and if you have children, it’s back to school time.  But August brings promise, the promise of the first weekend in September. Yes, on the first weekend of September each year, it’s the time most wives love to hate – SEC Football and the opening day of dove season.  And, that’s just the start, leading strait into a full season of the NFL complete with days of your significant other out communing with nature as it can only be found on a deer stand or in a duck blind!

MTA 2011 CVB of the Year

Written by Chrissy Garner for Travel Tunica

    Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau

Since 1997, the Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) has had the primary goal of promoting and bringing visitors to the destination.  As the years have accrued, the branding may have changed and the product may have expanded, but the one thing that has stayed consistent and worked well is the TCVB’s ability to work cooperatively with the casino industry.

The TCVB originally determined key markets and knew that to be successful in marketing the destination they had to extend reach and maximize dollars.  A cooperative program was developed for the casinos to buy-into.  Over the past 18 months, the CVB has leveraged their marketing dollars of $900,000 with industry partner dollars of $600,000 for a combined total of $1.5 million in the following campaigns:

Tunica River Watch – Update May 2

The staggered casino property plan implemented by the Tunica casino industry, in conjunction with Emergency Management officials and the Mississippi Gaming Commission, was completed this morning with the scheduled closing of the three casino properties located at Casino Center (Gold Strike Casino Resort, Horseshoe Casino & Hotel and Tunica Roadhouse Casino & Hotel).

The plan, put into effect on Wednesday, April 27, was designed to allow all gaming industry employees and Tunica county visitors to safely leave the unprotected side of the Mississippi River levee system well in advance of the rising water.  The Mississippi Gaming Commission and gaming executives have successfully completed the extensive closure procedures that include the protection of gaming equipment and the removal of all money from each facility.

Officials from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fish and the Department of Homeland Security have arrived in Tunica County to assist local law enforcement in patrolling all access points to the county’s nine casino properties.  Beginning today at 2:00 p.m., only those essential gaming industry personnel along with emergency management officials will be allowed to cross the Mississippi River levee.

Please note that the Veranda and Terrace Hotels at Harrah’s property on the east side of the levee, the Harrah’s Convention Center, the Bellissimo Spa at Harrah’s, Cottonwoods Golf Course, Tunica National Golf & Tennis, and Casino Factory Shoppes are all OPEN and will remain OPEN for business as usual.

As always, the safety of Tunica’s visitors and employees is our primary concern, and we will continue to update you via this site as conditions change or new information becomes available.
